CASE STUDY: Dave + Sonya Photography Brand
Recently I worked with Dave and Sonya of (you guessed it) Dave + Sonya Photography to help freshen up their brand, appeal to their target market, and give them a website that does their photos justice.
Dave and Sonya are a Colorado Springs husband and wife photography team, specializing in pure, unfiltered high school senior sessions with a focus on athletes and dancers. They provide you with the best creative sessions and photos your family will cherish for generations. They also took our anniversary wedding redo photos for us several years ago, and are people we consider friends. Their talent as well as eye for senior portraits specifically is astounding. We worked together to bring that same excellence to their brand.
Goal: Make logo and brand appealing to a younger, teenage (high school senior) audience. Provide helpful materials for Dave and Sonya to be able to stay within brand style, use consistent language with their market, and show the excellence of their photography.
First, the original logo:
All of the basic, core elements of an effective logo were present. Clean, clear typography encompassed in a circle (representative of camera lens and complete experience). We explored varying logo concepts that took the brand in a new direction:
But ultimately decided that a simple update to color, a cleaning up of the font placement and size, and an expansion of their logo into a full brand including cohesive watermark was all that was necessary. Updating the color instantly made it appeal towards a younger demographic and hit our design goals. That's why time and research should be the bulk of brand development as you make sure you're not making design changes just for the sake of "change," but rather to achieve something BETTER.
Melody is a rock star! She transformed our online presence from middle-of-the-road to king of the hill! She refreshed our branding, built a brand standards guide that keeps our branding consistent and polished, and built the mother of all websites for us. And she walked us through it from start to finish. Rock on, Melody!
