National Poetry Month—Kayla Hollatz
Today for our poet feature, we're honored to get a sneak peek at the inside of Kayla Hollatz's poetry collection that will be self-published later this year. Enjoy her poem, My Visit to Your Bathroom, along with a custom illustration by Hannah Lewis.
My Visit to Your Bathroom
As I opened the medicine cabinet
carefully hidden behind a broken mirror,
I discovered transparent orange bottles
with cracked childproof tabs
on each cap, concealing diet pills
the size of ants.
I replaced the capsules with fully bloomed daisies
and I hope you swallow each petal
and ingest each stem
so you can eat something that,
like you, encompasses beauty.
I'm Kayla Hollatz, a twenty-something multi-passionate writer who has a fierce love for poetry. I created my first poetry collection when I was seven with my own spin on nursery rhymes and I haven't stopped picking up the pen since.
My younger self would be happy to know that I've recently been putting together my first poetry collection and have teamed up with a talented illustrator from the UK, Hannah Lewis, to make it happen. We will self-publish my poetry mixed with her illustrations to create a powerful, coming-of-age poetry collection titled Brave Little Bones this year. In honor of April being National Poetry Month, we couldn't be more thrilled to share a sneak peek into our book by showing you a poem and illustration.
